The ion optical components for the PureJet system are designed using the ion simulation program SIMION. Since several different pressure regimes are covered, the interaction model within SIMION is adjusted to reflect the local collision environment. Under high and ultra high vacuum conditions, the mean free path is long and collisions do not play a significant role in the ion behavior.
These figures show SIMION models (clockwise from upper right) for the ion funnel, collision cell and final deposition optics. In each image ions move from left to right. The funnel and collision cell use RF fields for ion steering, and they incorporate (different) collision models for the simulation. The optics example uses DC fields only, with no collision model. The ion optics simulation in this example includes deflection plates at the end of the beam path for ion steering before impact.
